Understanding the Viet Nam Vet Harry Kieninger Home / Book / Author / Links / Order / Guestbook My name is Harry Kieninger. I was born June 9, 1946, in a small house in Indianapolis, IN. I came from a large family of 3 brothers and 3 sisters. My family was very poor. My father was in the Navy in WW II. He was discharged in 1945 so I have always been affected by war in some way. As a child I lived a scattered life, many times living with relatives who really didn't want me there. At age 15, I was homeless and on my own. School was over for me as I had to find a way to survive. I worked at a car wash for daily pay and soon had enough money to get a room. It wasn't much but at least I felt peace and dignity. In 1965 I had a good job and was getting a GED. I moved in with my mother to help with finances and things seemed better than ever. I came home from work one day in October 1965. My mother had tears in her eyes as she handed me a letter and said, "Harry, this came for you today. It's from the government." I knew what it was as the Vietnam War was in full swing at that time. I was drafted. Things were going to change and I knew it. By November 1966 I was a combat medic in the Vietnam War. I was 19 years old when I was drafted on February 23, 1966. In the following 2 years I experienced hell on earth. I believe we are all a part of a Divine Order that we cannot see into. I'm thankful I was chosen to suffer if my suffering indeed brings healing to others. Thank You, Harry Kieninger Combat Medic '66 |
